Over two million Romanians have hearing problems. What causes hearing loss

Hearing loss is a condition that affects social integration and has a major impact: we cannot communicate with family and friends, we no longer understand telephone conversations, we do not hear television, music or nature sounds.

Globally, half a billion of the population suffers from a form of hearing loss, and by 2025, due to several factors, the number of people affected by hearing loss may increase by another 200,000 million. In Romania, over 2 million people have a hearing problem, and up to 50% of people with hearing impairments are under the age of 65, many of them children or young people. At the same time, 3 babies out of 1,000 are born with permanent hearing problems.

In the opinion of Ionuț Ștefanescu, audiologist and general manager Clarfon, the main causes of hearing loss are: prolonged exposure to excessive noise ceilings (over 85 decibels), aging, circulatory diseases, some toxic drugs for the auditory nerve, etc.

“The causes can be multiple, some of them can be cured or improved medically or surgically, others need hearing aid. It is important to talk to your doctor as soon as you notice a hearing loss, especially if it suddenly appeared.

The hearing loss will be investigated by your doctor through an ENT clinical examination, but also with the help of paraclinical examinations, such as audiometry, imepedansometry, auditory evoked potentials and if necessary with the help of MRI or CT examination, "explains Ionut Stefanescu, the director of Clarfon – one of the most important companies that sell hearing aids in Romania

Does hypoacusis hurt?

According to the specialist, hearing loss does not hurt, but most of the time it affects your quality of life. “The whining, the permanent bruises, the loss of the capacity of coordination in space, do not allow the sufferer to concentrate and to carry out the daily activities, isolate him socially. Regardless of the causes that cause it (hereditary, inflammatory, dysfunction of some organs), hypoacusis, even partial, affects the psyche, produces distrust in one's own forces, irascibility, gives birth to ideas of inferiority. The professional, industrial, but also the firecrackers, the music given to the maximum, the murmur of the road traffic, etc., are very bad, ”says Ionut Stefanescu.

The hearing loss can be: mild (between 30-50 dB), moderate (between 50-70 dB), accentuated or deep (between 70-90 dB), auditory residues (over 90 dB), cofosis (gr. Kophos – deafness, deafness total).

Hearing aids used in Romania

Fortunately, there are many ways to help people with hearing loss. If for some the solution is represented by drug treatment or surgery, in the case of others the hearing aid is a real help. “People with hearing loss can benefit from hearing aids, hearing aids and cochlear implants. They can also benefit from speech therapy, hearing rehabilitation and other related services. Although not even the most advanced hearing aids can completely restore hearing, they can greatly improve your hearing, and adjusting them professionally will allow a definite improvement in the quality of your life, ”explains Ionut Stefanescu, Clarfon director.
