Heart disease continues to be the main cause of mortality in Romania, but can be prevented up to 80% by regular medical checkup, said Dr. Dan Gaiţă, president of the Prevention Forum.

The specialist says that "we have to eat balanced (but less …), make daily movements (but according to our state of health), not smoke (not even passively) and give us enough rest time."

What we eat to have a healthy heart

The most important risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease are: age, heredity, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, sedentary disease, and diseases such as hypertension or diabetes. Of these, some factors are unchangeable (such as age and heredity), but most can be modified and controlled by daily physical activity, maintaining a normal weight, or adopting a healthy diet by:

  • replacing the intake of animal fats saturated with mono or polyunsaturated fats;
  • limiting the consumption of foods that have low nutrient content and increased calories;
  • eating foods high in fiber and nutrients (vegetables and fruits);
  • optimal control of blood pressure, glycemia and cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides);
  • quitting smoking;
  • performing regular medical checkups.
